Case Study - Filtration revamp on a 24000 gallon pond
We were contacted in late January regarding a large pond in Essex with a disfunctional filtration installation. It turned out to follow in the footsteps of many koi ponds before it in so much that it was built by a general builder with little experience of a proper koi pond construction. Whilst the finish around the pond and its actual construction is sound the mechanics are far below par. Although Nexus units are fine filters when correctly installed, on this pond they were insufficient to maintain proper clarity and waste removal. Following a long winter of harsh weather the pond had suffered with algae problems and this further compounded the situation with the Nexus units blocking and K1 over flowing into the filter bay. This coupled with an inadequate waste outlet / sump pump system ended in disaster over the holiday period when the pond overflowed and all the pumps were flooded. It was at this point we received the call that led to the works of revamping of the filtration system.
The existing filters were all removed and the filter bay drained and the 300mm of sludge pumped away to elsewhere on the property. The pond was also drained and the fish removed to enable the pond to be cleaned and the bottom drain lids refitted correctly after they had blown off when the bottom drains were rodded unsuccessfully. Once clean the pond was refilled following the fitting of two new 4" ball valves on the bottom drain lines and the fish replaced. The new filtration was to consist of two Ultra sieve 3's coupled with Econobead 60's powered by 1/2HP pumps. There was an existing Aquadyne which was installed onto the skimmer line with another 1/2HP pump. Each line has the equivalent of two 55W Ultraviolet’s installed upon them. Finally the inadequate waste pump was replaced with a ultra reliable submersible sump pump with a self actuating pin float switch to enable automatic water evacuation to elsewhere on the property. The result - a clean, clear pond with a very low maintenance, low hassle yet simple filtration system on a large 24,000 gallon pond.
