Koi Pond Portfolio - 10000 gallons, Kent
This 10000 gallon koi pond was built and landscaped by Nippon Nishikigoi in 2007 and forms part of a formal garden to a large house. There was a pond occupying the site which was in a poor state, with subsidence making it unstable and the overgrowth encroached all around it. Upon removal of this pond the excavation was completed to 7ft and the concrete base poured. Built with conventional concrete blocks, the pond was lined out with polyurethane foam before fibreglassing. The finish is locally sourced reclaimed imperial brick and sandstone capping. There is a smaller pond above the main body of water which feeds through a simple slate rill into the main pond creating movement and sound. The filtration is a simple setup of two vortex units and two bead filters, powered by two large pumps. This is all contained within a basic wooden filtration housing beyond the garden wall thus creating the illusion of a koi pond with no visable filtration. Once completed the pond was landscaped with a sandstone patio area, paths, new lawn and simple planting above. Whilst to many this pond looks too stark in appearance, it is in fact well suited to the house and garden.
