Natural pond renovation. A solution for eroding pond banks.

Natural ponds are clay lined excavations which are usually dug out and normally barely landscaped or finished properly. While a certain level of balance is required within a natural pond, they do need attention to maintain both the aesthetic look and the environment. Water plants require regular attention to prevent them encroaching into the pond. If fish or ducks are present the banks of a natural pond will be eroded away in very little time indeed. A properly landscaped natural pond in the grounds of a house will not only improve the look of the pond and garden but also add to the value of the property.

Our solution to the problem of bank erosion is a simple yet effective one, the pond is drained and the bank cut back vertically. We then drive 100mm stakes into the ground until they are solid and nail 100mm or 150mm boards on the rear of these. Cutting the top of the stake off at an angle creates a nicer finish too. We then use a landscape fabric to stablise the soil behind the board and fill the void with hardcore or roadstone materials. This is then dressed on top and re-turfed or seeded to bring the grass down to the edge of the pond. The result is a clean looking and very stable bank which will last upto 10 years. For larger ponds or lakes we can use railway sleepers and telegraph poles to stablise deeper water.

We also offer natural pond creation and renovation service including full desilting.
